Join The Great Toy-Car Drive today ...

The Great Toy-Car Drive takes off Thursday 11 September 2008

Do you want to do something about climate change / global warming by reducing your carbon footprint?

Do you want to participate in an exciting community collaborative sculpture?

Yes that’s right - sculpture!
A life-sized car sculpture made from used toy-cars.

Throughout Spring'08 / Summer'09 artist Brendan Penzer is asking the community to collaborate with him in helping to tackle issues of climate change.

YOU are invited to take part in The Great Toy-Car Drive by simply donating a toy car to this project in exchange for leaving your car at home and travelling by an alternative method of transport such as by foot, bicycle, or public transport.

The project is all about the small steps that individuals and communities can undertake now to make a difference in regards to climate change and the damage that we, collectively, are doing to the planet. The Great Toy-Car Drive, along with being a fun artistic project and an example of community building, aims to illustrate, through a profound symbolic gesture, a commitment to change by the community.

Penzer will take The Great Toy-Car Drive to the people, attending a significant community event in every local government area in greater metropolitan Sydney over the six month period.

At these events, willing participants will donate a toy-car, be photographed and asked to sign a global warming pledge book. The pledge is a statement of intention from each participant in terms of taking ownership of the obligations of change that humans need to make in order to alleviate the human-caused damage to the climate.

The Great Toy-Car Drive is an inclusive platform to engage in conversations about climate change, the resulting documentation will be an important and revealing survey of time and place.

For those that can't make it to the community events, an ongoing central Collection Station is at Newtown's At The Vanishing Point - Contemporary Art, 565 King Street Newtown NSW 2042. Ph (02) 95192340.

The toy cars collected in the The Great Toy-Car Drive will be used to construct a life-sized car sculpture that will be created over the six month period.

The project will be exhibited in progress at Road:Rode, an art exhibition for the 2008 International Bicycle Film Festival at At The Vanishing Point - Contemporary Art in November 2008. The end result will be exhibited later in 2009.

Stay tuned to this website for continual updates and progress documentation throughout the project.
